Book Nooks: Making a Case for Reading
Architecture and design firms across Puget Sound made a persuasive case for reading thirteen of them to be exact. As part of its Book Nooks Campaign to purchase books for at-risk children, Page Ahead Children's Literacy Program invited firms to design and create original bookcases.
Initiated in 2002, Book Nooks appealed to the industry's talents for high-quality products, ingenious design, and creativity. The campaign exceeded all expectations, raising nearly $8,000 for children's literacy as well as creating spectacular works of functional art. A purple castle, a magic tree house, a bookcase sprouting grass, a curtained chamber containing a treasure chest that's what happened when inspired adults set about inspiring children to read.
This year's cases were featured at Northwest Folklife Festival in Center House at Seattle Center, and at select University Village stores, while being auctioned online. Many participating architecture firms hosted their own in-house book drives to benefit Page Ahead. The proceeds from the Book Nooks Campaign will be used to purchase books for children from low-income families across Washington State.
