Page Ahead's Programs: What Does Your Money Buy?
$50
Ten books to be chosen by children to keep and treasure. For some children, this is the first book they will ever own. Teachers from Page Ahead's 209 partner sites report that book ownership—the availability of a book at home—is both a source of pride and a tremendous incentive to read.
$100
"Story Times" for kindergarten through 2nd grade for one entire school. "Story Times" are participatory reading activities led by Page Ahead staff at which books are read and the stories in them are discussed, and children are led in related art activities.
$250
The cost of producing a workshop for parents and children in which families learn the importance of children's literacy, receive activity packets and suggestions to help children learn and love to read, and find out how to become involved in schools.
$500
One month's salary for Page Ahead's two VISTA and one AmeriCorps staff members. These energetic individuals go out into the community—reading to children, organizing volunteers to read with children, teaching parents how to support their children's reading, organizing book drives, enlisting companies into Page Ahead's "Community Partnership Program," collecting books at sporting events, planning special events, and researching new and innovative ways to deliver more books to more kids than ever before.
$1,000
Books (through the Reading is Fundamental program) for an entire elementary school. These books are distributed three to five times a year at special events at which reading and learning are celebrated. At many of these events, children's authors, athletes, and entertainers talk about the value of books in their lives. Schools choose certain themes, such as diversity, and build their book distributions around these themes.
