Family Involvement Program Services
The family is instrumental in developing within each child a love for books and the ability to read. Page Ahead works with partner sites to involve parents and caregivers in the reading activities of their children. Based on research, best practices, and a survey of its partner sites, Page Ahead is helping parents become active participants in their child's literacy development.
Workshops
- In the Families Read workshop, parents learn to choose what, when, and how to read to their children in order to maximize learning and develop literacy skills in the young. Parents and children also decorate a box to hold the free books they receive from Page Ahead.
- In the Read to Me workshop, parents are taught to make use of television's potential as a teaching partner. Families learn to integrate activities and reading with KCTS public television programs. Children choose books to take home.
- Pack to School is a kit provided to parents of children who are about to begin school. The kit includes supplies and activities that children will encounter in kindergarten and makes those formal learning experiences familiar and comfortable.
- First Page: A Guide for Families Entering School is a workshop about the basics: what should parents expect when their child attends school for the first time. Topics include: navigating through the school system, necessary documents and immunizations, communicating with teachers, and making the first day of school one of the best days in a child's (and parent's) life.
- The Guest Reader program provides schools and educational programs with a story time that includes songs, finger puppets, themes, and engaging activities.
- On the Same Page is a workshop for educators who seek to create family-friendly reading events and involve parents in their child's learning. Tips on successful events and techniques for great turnout are included.
